Raphael encounters the grotesques into the Domus Aurea, probably seeing his restless soul reflected on them, perceiving in those strange depictions the greatness, the love for beauty, but also the genius and the recklessness of whom had created them. Behind these representations there was a young man, madly in love with art, histrionic and controversial, born 1500 years before. He couldn’t know Raphael, but art and excess are characteristics which attract him and belong to him. That man is nothing less than Nerone, the most controversial Roman emperor, who lived in art and challenged the Roman Senate. A strong and extraordinary man.
